As part of the trip to obtain my Student Visa, the tour group continued from Ljubljana down to Trieste, Italy. After leaving Ljubljana at 12:30 pm, we arrived in Trieste within two hours. Trieste is a port city located in northern Italy. Our tour bus zigzagged down the steep mountain toward the city center, located right on the water’s edge! I was pleasantly surprised to find that our hostel was on the waterfront! My room was a couple floors up with a balcony overlooking the ocean.

It was a hot and sunny day, so a couple friends and I went down to the water. I went swimming for a bit, the water was a bit choppy and the bottom was rocky so I didn’t stay in long. After the swim, I ordered a beer and relaxed by the water.

Nearing supper time, we dressed up and prepared for a city tour of Trieste and an evening of pizza, wine, and karaoke! It was a great evening and we were able to meet other exchange students studying in Trieste!

The following morning I had breakfast on a balcony with a delightful view of the ocean! Afterwards, I walked 10 minutes down the street to Miramare Castle. This castle was stunning! Possibly one of my favourites! (probably because it is located right on the ocean!). By 12:00 pm, we had to board the bus and make our way back to Ljubljana! Trieste surprised me, it was a much bigger city than I imagined and I didn’t think I was going to be able to go for a swim! Each year during the first week of October, Trieste holds a massive regatta that attracts over 2000 sailboats! I was not able to make it this year, but I hope to return to Trieste another year!
